With the publicity generated by the documentary "End of the Line" the public has the right to be concerned about fish stocks. However please keep these points in mind;
- SA does not have industrialised fisheries and most are owner operator/small business owners with small vessels
- SA and Australia have some of the most conservatively managed fisheries in the world
- SA has one fishery MSC certified as sustainable - Lakes and Coorong Fishery
- SA has two species endorsed by the Aust Conservation Foundation – Coorong Mullet and SA King Prawn
- Degradation of habitat and pollution are the TWO MOST SIGNIFICANT ISSUES in the preservation of fish stocks i.e.loss of seagrass beds and destruction of mangrove areas where the majority of fish species breed and juveniles are protected
- Commercial fishing has minimal impact on total fish stocks in SA - there have been huge cutbacks over the past 30 years.
- Poaching and availability of black market fish have a huge impact on fish stocks likely to be greater than any commercial operations.
- If the SA Public want to have confidence in their fish stocks then don’t buy or accept fish from unlicensed operators
- Marine Parks will not prevent pollution and loss of seagrass and destruction of mangrove areas
- Many of the areas that are prime fish breeding areas are not included in the current Marine Park boundaries , and rehabilitation of these areas are critical
- Desalination plants have an unknown impact on fish stocks, there are several of these touted for SA around our gulfs.
The Public are urged to only buy fish from licensed fishers and processors
And call for Marine park adjacent to Adelaide's coastline and in the upper Gulf
What was the Coorong like before??
See Frank Gibbs describe the abundance prior to the barrages
being put in and Salt Creek water diverted.
We have achieved Marine Stewardship Council Certiciation
as a well managed, sustainable fishery!
However the Lakes and Coorong are in crisis and it is not our fault!
